Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) for PhD admission enquiries

1.       When Can I apply for Ph.D entrance test?

You can apply online after the notification for Ph.D admission is issued by the university through website. However notification in each discipline will depend on number of seats available for admission.

            2.      What is fee for entrance test and where it can be paid?

Fee for the Ph.D entrance test is Rs. 2000/ (Non-refundable), it is paid online.

            3.       What is the time duration and qualifying marks in the Ph.D entrance test?

The time duration for the test will be 120 minutes. Test will comprise of two sections. The first part will include the research methodology and second part will be subject specific. Each part will comprise of 60 questions, thus, making total of 120 questions for the test. Each question will carry 1 mark making the question paper of 120 marks.

It will be compulsory for the candidate to secure minimum passing marks in each section (Which amounts to be 50% i.e. 30 marks for the general category and 45% i.e. 27 for reserved categories).

The passing marks will be 50% of the total i.e. 60 marks for general category and 45% for reserved categories i.e. 54 marks.

            4.      What is syllabus for the Ph.D entrance test?

 

The syllabus of the Entrance Test shall consist of 50% of research methodology and 50% shall be subject specific. Syllabus for Ph.D. entrance test will be based on syllabus content defined by University Grants Commission for NET (UGC). Subjects (Engineering) for which UGC do not conduct the NET, GATE/GPAT syllabus will be followed.

 

            5.      What is minimum eligibility for applying Ph.D program?

 

Candidates for admission to the Ph.D programme shall have a Master's degree in the relevant/allied subject or a professional degree declared equivalent to the Master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in aggregate. A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, shall be allowed for those belonging to SC / ST / OBC (non-creamy layer) / Differently- abled and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the Commission from time to time.

            6.      Is there any exemption for candidates for Ph.D entrance test?

Yes, only those candidates who fulfil one of the following eligibility criteria are exempted from the PhD entrance test:   

                   i)        UGC/CSIR Exam/SLET/GATE/GPAT

                   ii)      Rajiv Gandhi Fellowship awardees

                   iii)    Teacher-fellowship holders/

                   iv)    INSPIRE/ or

                   v)      Candidates who are awarded Fellowships directly or by other funding agencies (ICAR/ICHR/ICMR/DBT/DST),

                   vi)    M.Phil candidates (who have admitted through entrance test and completed M.Phil degree in regular mode).

 

            7.      What is final selection criterion for declaring eligibility for Ph.D admission?

The numbers of candidates who will be called for interview will be double the number of seats available for admission. The inter-se merit of candidates appeared in test will be made on the basis of merit calculated as per the following criteria:

 

      (i) Weightage to marks in Master‘s / M.Phil programme : 40%

      (ii) Weightage to marks in entrance test : 40%

      (iii) Weightage to interview : 20%

            8.      Does success in PhD entrance test ensure admission in the PhD program?

No, Candidate has to appear in the interview which will be focused on candidates research interest/plan. For candidates who are declared successful after interview, their admission is subject to availability of slot.

            9.      How long is Ph.D entrance test valid?

 

The candidate who has been selected for Ph.D programme after qualifying the test i.e. written and interview may take admission in June- July or Dec-Jan. If the candidate has been selected in the session Dec- Jan then he can take admission in the session Dec-Jan and June-July. If the student fails to take admission in the said two consecutive sessions then his/her candidature will stand cancelled.

10.  Can you provide complete fee structure of PhD Programme?

            11.  May I know the Pre PhD Course work will be run regular or part time?

 

Pre PhD Course works are to be run in the main Campus of IKGPTU, Kapurthala on regular mode (Five days in week).

 

     12.  How to reset your Password?

           The following options are available to reset Password:

 

i)                    Using Security Question & its Answer you chosen during Form filling.

ii)                  Using a verification code sent via text message (SMS) to your Registered Mobile No.

iii)                Using a reset link sent via Email to your Registered Email address.

 

13.  May I know entrance/interview dates in advance so as to plan accordingly?

             Ans. Admit card will be updated in your login as per notification. Tentative dates have been already notified.  Please visit at                                    www.ptu.ac.in/PhdAdmissions.aspx or www.ptuadmissions.nic.in  for more information.     

      14.  Do I require sending the hard copy of application form?

 

Ans. Do not send hard copy of application form or other documents to IKGPTU by post. The original application form attested by Head of the Organization (where working, if in service), original documents of eligibility and supporting documents of test exempted /Cleared entrance test of IKGPTU- 2017, will be verified at the time of interview.
